Justification for the Sake of the Nation

The cause of the home political crisis in Armenia is that the society is unable to shape a legitimate government, and this government is shaped independently from the society and acts on internal arrangements rather than the law. Manvel Sargsyan, expert of the Armenian Center of National and International Studies, spoke about this in a discussion on June 3. According to him, being unable to fulfill its right to establish a Constitutional government and a Constitutional order of rule, the society has actually appeared outside the ongoing process and has become a body which has duties and has ceded its rights to the privileged class.

According to Manvel Sargsyan, a classic criminal and oligarchic system has emerged in Armenia which is a rather solid structure and is made up of not only the elite but also tens of thousands of people who serve the interests of this system. According to the expert, they have declared themselves a privileged class, a member of which is punished in case it breaks the internal laws of this class.

According to the expert, this situation is the consequence of the low legal awareness of the society which enables the system to feed the citizens with myths, formulations for the sake of the state and for the sake of the nation, when for instance the opposition party presents its deal with the government as an action taken for the sake of the state. The expert says, for instance, that through declarations for the sake of the nation and for the sake of the state the government justifies the clampdown on demonstrators in March when people were killed. As long as the legal awareness of the society is low, as long as the society does not condemn any formula or idea which has nothing to do with rights, it will be easy to cheat the society, the expert says, noting that in normal systems, in normal states, what is in accordance with the law is acceptable for the society and what is illegal is unacceptable.
