Why doesn’t Nikol Pashinyan go to Liberty Square?

During today’s parliamentary briefings, Armenian lawmaker Nikol Pashinyan replied to the appeal of the New Armenia Public Salvation Front which is staging a round-the-clock sit-in at Liberty Square against the pending constitutional changes.

“They gave a definite name. I represent a political force. If this is a personal matter, it is one format. But if it is a political matter, then it is quite a different format,” Pashinyan said.

Zhirayr Sefilyan, head of the joint opposition headquarters of the New Armenia opposition group, earlier appealed Nikol Pashinyan to join their struggle against the acting regime. Mr. Pashinyan reiterated their positions; they do not want to lead people to defeat. “At the same time we do not say that the change of power in Armenia is excluded because the Civil Contract is not participating in the process. We also told them that when they have a definite roadmap to achieve the change of power we shall discuss it and respond to them. As long as there is not such a roadmap, we actually have nothing to discuss with them,” Pashinyan said.

At the same time, the lawmaker says he respects all political figures, who are at Liberty Square now. “Neither the Civil Contract, nor I have received a roadmap; hence we cannot discuss the change of power now. Until the last minute, we have described to them the way we image the power change. We are not saying that we are saying the truth and we do not rule out that we might be mistaken in our calculations. Now if our colleagues have any arguments and believe that we have not analyzed the situation correctly, we are ready to listen to them and discuss these arguments. If our colleagues have concrete ideas and steps regarding the implementation of the roadmap, I mean the change of regime, we are ready to discuss them.”
