The opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) is holding a march on December 10 in connection with Human Rights Day. About 300 members of the opposition alliance are heading from Liberty Square to Republic Square at present. They are going to hand a letter to the Yerevan Office of the Council of Europe, in which they ask the CoE to force the Armenian government to fulfill its commitments in the sphere of human rights. Before the march, HAK MPs Aram Manukyan and Levon Zurabyan addressed the participants of the event. As they said the opposition alliance is struggling to see its four jailed activists in freedom. Opposition activists Tigran Arakelyan, Artak Karapetyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kiramijyan were arrested after an August 9, 2011, standoff with police officers in a Yerevan park. They were charged with hooliganism against a representative of law-enforcement body and sentenced to 2-6 years in prison. Following the arrest, HA suspended talks with the country's authorities and said the arrest was politically motivated. HAK Leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan is not participating in the march.
