"Twenty convicts are placed in a cell intended for eight people. They don't even have beds to sleep in," human rights advocate Edmon Marukyan said during the EU-Armenia Civil Society Seminar on November 10.
He tried to blame the Armenian authorities for the shortcomings of the sphere.
"There are 4850 prisoners in Armenia while our cells can hold 4 396 prisoners at best," he said.
Among the reasons for overcrowding he pointed out the restraint.
"In most cases, courts sentence defendants to imprisonment, thus contributing to overcrowding. 153 out of the 179 convicts who have applied for preterm release have been rejected this year," said the human rights activist adding, "Free the convicts if you cannot provide them with necessary conditions."
