The Committee for Defense of Political Prisoners and the Politically Persecuted of Armenia has addressed a letter to the participants of the CE Forum for the "Future of Democracy".
"The current authorities falsified the 2008 presidential elections and that is proven in the reports by reputable international organizations, European structures and the US Department of State. The Armenian people revolted against the overt and cynical falsification with protests and sitting strikes held at Freedom Square in central Yerevan all day long. With the desire to keep power through falsified elections, the authorities dispersed the peaceful rallies and sitting strikes by force. The next day, on March 1, agitated by the unjustified application of force, the people came out to the square once again. This time the authorities attacked the people with armed subdivisions and as a result, ten people were killed, over a hundred citizens received injuries of different degrees and thousands were either arrested or persecuted. Armenia's prisons were full of hundreds of political prisoners and after two years since the events, 13 detainees are still in prison.
The Committee for Defense of Political Prisoners and the Politically Persecuted of Armenia calls on the participants of the Council of Europe Forum to stay true to European values, as well as defend the political prisoners and take advantage of all levers and opportunities for their immediate release."
