Young activists of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) today held a march in downtown Yerevan chanting "Freedom to Liberty Square," "Armenia's survival depends on you."
The marchers aim to "reconquer" the square, which was closed for opposition meetings after the deadly clashes of March 1, 2008.
The march started from the HAK central office on Koryun Street and headed to Liberty Square. However, the marchers could not enter the square as was blocked by police officers. Bypassing the square, HAK activists walked to the Yerevan Municipality.
"The marchers demand that the municipality sanction opposition rallies at Liberty Squares," said HAK activist Harutyun KIramijyan.
Sergey Gasparyan said HAK would continue to struggle against unlawfulness.
"We think that the square is "imprisoned" and we are confident of our victory. I hope HAK will hold its next rally at the square," he said.
"With their constant denial, the authorities prove that Armenia is far from being a country of law. Today we did not avoid clashes with the police, we simply decided to wait for the authorities' decision," HAK representative Vladimir Karapetyan told A1+.
