The HAK (Armenian National Congress) today decided where to hold its September 17 rally during a session convened at the central office. The decision will be released tomorrow.
Let us remind that Yerevan municipality has prohibited HAK from holding a rally at Freedom Square and has allowed a rally near the Matenadaran. The municipality reasoned that that is the day when preparations for Erebuni-Erevan celebration will begin.
HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan viewed the municipality's decision as illegal and believes that the decision was approved by Serzh Sargsyan in a conversation with "".
"Such decisions are not approved in any other way. The authorities are simply horrified by what could happen if the opposition holds another rally at Freedom Square," said Zurabyan.
According to him, when the HAK representatives were presenting a notice of the rally to the municipality, there was no information about the Erebuni-Yerevan celebrations and the municipality hadn't even provided any notice.
The correspondents of the municipality have announced that they are not obliged to give a notice about their event.
Levon Zurabyan views that as a ridiculous demagogy which, according to him, shows that they lack primitive knowledge of the law. "The law clearly states that regardless of the event, if it should serve as a basis for prohibition, it has to be notified by an order prescribed by the law. With such a response, the municipality shows that it views itself above the law, that is, everyone must abide by this law, except the municipality."
Levon Zurabyan stressed that they will not settle with this and will do everything possible to have "Armenian democracy conquer its traditional place for rallies, which is Freedom Square".
When "A1+" tried to find out the schedule for the Erebuni-Yerevan celebrations from the municipality's department of culture, the correspondents said it was still unclear.
