The head of Armenia’s Helsinki Committee Avetik Ishkhanyan, the journalist Vahan Ishkhanyan and sociologist Meri Yeranosyan presented today their study on the freedom of religious in Armenia.
Avetik Ishkhanyan noted that the Armenian legislation on the freedom of religion is full of contradictions and we need a new legislation. There are no equal conditions for the activities of religious organizations. According to Avetik Ishkhanyan, the most disputable is the law adopted last year which contains inquisition in the phase of registration.
There are currently 70 people deprived of freedom who refused obligatory military service.
Journalist Vahan Ishkhanyan, who presented the publications in the press on the religious organizations, said that for the first time they dwelt on the problems of religious organizations back in 1993.
In 1995, by the order of the Minister of Defense Vazgen Sargsyan, assaults against 8 religious organizations were organized and they were demanded to stop their activities threatened death.
According to the study of the publications in the press, many ungrounded criticism and attacks against non-apostolic organizations were found.
According to Vahan Ishkhanyan, in this sense, papers are similar to propaganda machines. Studies show that the violation of freedom of conscience is mainly connected with mass media rather than the power.
