What has been happening these past few days in Liberty Square and the surrounding area is nothing other than the manifestation of the ruling authorities’ panic. Some hundreds of policemen, half of which are in civilian attire, are trying to not let a group of tens of opposition activists into Liberty Square. Perhaps it is unnecessary to note that the actions of the policemen have nothing to do with the law or lawfulness. We will, of course, address that issue separately, but for now let us only note that if a group of people in civilian attire is trying to ensure the “public order” by making citizens leave a public area, then the group has immediately and automatically become a gang of criminals which has seized a territory (in this case Liberty Square), occupied it, and is trying to keep it from the “outsiders.” And those who resisted were “rendered harmless” in the way pictured in the photograph. This is a gross violation of the RA Constitution and high-ranking officials of the police, at least, are surely aware of it. The police take such a step either because they realize their own complete impunity, or because they see a serious danger in the situation that has been created. Today in Armenia there exists, of course, total impunity for policemen; they can even kill people in police stations and then present it as suicide. But in the past two years, many international structures have been preparing thick “dossiers” about the illegalities of our legal structures, and using them to pressure the authorities of Armenia. This is why the actions of the police are the manifestation of the panic and fear, which demolishes 24 hour a day propaganda about the “strength,” “power,” and “durability” of the authorities. Incidentally, seventeen citizens were taken to the Central police station from Liberty and Saryan squares, among them three journalists, Lilit Tadevosyan of “Hayk” newspaper, and Syuzanna Poghosyan and Ani Gevorgyan of “Haykakan Zhamanak” newspaper. The latter was arrested at about 11 pm, and two more citizens, Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kiramijyan, were arrested at about 3 am.
P.S. Yesterday, from 8 pm until 2 am, about thirty policemen dressed mainly in civilian attire were standing fifteen meters away from the entry of the editorial office of “Haykakan Zhamanak” newspaper, and were monitoring the entry of the office.
